According to the EPA, radon is the second leading cause of cancer. Twenty-one thousand people die of exposure every year. Radon is an odorless colorless radioactive gas that is produced when uranium breaks down. Such a process can occur in water, rocks and soil. Radon often seeps into homes through foundations or wells. One in 15 homes may have a radon problem, and I have been told by home and radon inspectors that it is very common in Maryland.
To lessen your risk, perform a radon test and if radon is present, have a soil suction system installed. Radon tests range between $80-$150 and remediation, if needed, costs between $800- $1200 depending on the age, style and size of your home.
